Since the early 1960s, the artist Burhan Cahit Doğançay embraced urban walls and graffiti as his primary subject. His work seeks to represent a specific place embedded in the images and phrases of contemporary pop culture.

He considered his work to be a testament to the passage of time, reflecting the emotions of urban life. The sorts of street art that inspired Doğançay are characterized by layers of marks and erasure left by people and the outdoor elements. Doğançay strove to recreate that same effect in his work. Doğançay re-creates the look of urban billboards and graffiti-covered wall surfaces. Below, you can explore the textures and depth of Doğançay's Give Peace a Chance (2009), currently on view as part of UMMA's You Are Here exhibition. The exhibition encourages visitors to feel present in the moment and take in the colors, materials, and meanings of the art on display. So dive in and see first hand how the artist uses his distinctive style to explore the political scene in Tibet.
