UMMA is number three on the overall list, The 35 Best College Art Museums, behind only Harvard Art Museums and Rhode Island School of Design Museum – two private universities.
Best College Reviews created their nation-wide list using four criteria:
- A permanent collection spanning multiple historical and cultural periods
- Size of collection
- Unique opportunities for university students
- Significant community involvement

Best College Reviews ranks college and universities in direct competition to US News & World Report's annual ratings, with a focus on online degree programs. The site also works to “document the experience of living on campus as part of a social and academic community,” hence their art museum rankings.
