The works selected for Art and Resistance: Global Responses to Oppression will demonstrate some of the ways artists from around the world have contested tyranny and subjugation in the last two centuries. Considering a range of topics, from demonstrations against the U.S. war in Vietnam to the legacy of colonialism in Africa and the global peace movement, students examine art as a form of political engagement. What roles have artists played inside and outside protest movements? How do artists make political work under systems of control and censorship? Students address these questions and others as they research the works on view.

Each work of art is an act of resistance in itself. It's not an example of what's happening politically. It is what's happening politically.

Subject matter
Generale is part of a series of satirical references to war generals form the 1930s and 1940s. Here the General is wearing a loud, colorful outfit that matches the screaming demeanor many of the generals embraced. The wallpaper behind him is very traditional. Prior to the Generals series, Baj co-founded a group known as Arte Nucleare which was concerned with post-war instability. The Generals were quite popular and helped launch Baj in the art community.
Physical Description
This collage depicts the torso and head of a figure consuming the majority of the composition. The left, handless, arm is raised up at a 90 degree angle in salute. The skin and hair is green, eyes are large white circles with small pupils, and the mouth is a white oval. The black and grey background has a pattern of elaborate floral wallpaper and the figures clothing, resembling a military uniform, is made of colorful splotches with a row of medals across the chest.

Subject matter
Asesinato del General Sandino detrás del Viejo Campo de Aviación shows the assasination of General Sandino who was the leader of the Nicaraugan rebel forces. The print is part of the series titled the Saga of Sandino. While it is known that Sandino was killed in 1934, the exact method and location of his remains is unknown. The narrative presented in this print has previously not been put forward as a theory, but may be just a dramatic reimagining of what the event would have been like.
Similar to Goya's famous painting The Third of May 1808, Morales heightens the contrast of light and dark to add pathos. The illumination of the lamp on the soon to be executed men's faces makes them seem angelic compared to the unidentifiable executioners.
