In a recent episode of the Modern Art Notes podcast, UMMA curator Laura de Becker joined host Tyler Green to discuss the unique investigational approach UMMA is taking to a current exhibition, Wish You Were Here: African Art and Restitution. 

The exhibition is an in-public, transparent look into 11 works of art in UMMA’s collection to investigate questions of ethical ownership, provenance, and potential repatriation of works back to their communities of origin — all of the work from the investigators is made public to museum visitors and via online investigation updates. In the podcast interview, de Becker describes the process of investigation the exhibition is showcasing, a process Green credits as a great model of transparency for other museums to follow when examining their own collections.
