Around Town: New Maps Take You On A Tour Of Ypsilanti Street Art, Prompt Reflection

Map design by Emily Considine
Three new walking tours from UMMA and YpsiWrites, a nonprofit community writing center, invite you to explore street art found throughout Ypsilanti neighborhoods. In addition to showcasing unique and varied locations across town, each map includes themed writing prompts for reflection and creativity.
The maps are available to pick up, for free, at two Ypsilanti District Library locations (see below). The first 200 participants will also receive a free writing journal to use alongside the maps’ writing prompts.

Downtown Ypsilanti
Location highlight - Riverside Arts
As you look at the cord tapestry and hanging sculpture of the yellow chairs, think about how sometimes we feel stuck. Write an encouraging letter to yourself or someone else who might feel tied in knots. How could you get yourself or them moving again?

Depot Town
Location highlight - Cultivate Coffee Shop
As you look at Cultivate, notice the mural's shapes and colors. How do they make you feel? Then, look at the street signs: Why do you think they named this Photo Street?

Eastern Michigan University
Location highlight: MLK Garden Images
The bust in this garden and the tablets on the brick wall represent Martin Luther King, Jr., a civil rights activist who inspired many to stand up for justice. Who inspires you? Write a letter to this person or write about a cause that you are passionate about.
